Donor Establishes Second Seminary Scholarship
(Monday, February 11, 2008)
For Alice Kruse of Blair, Nebraska, mission and education have always been passions of hers, and she has lived her life by example.
A native of Clay Center, Nebraska, Alice graduated from Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa, taught at the Red Bird School in Kentucky for 16 years, and then returned to LeMars where she taught and served as head of the English Department at Westmar University (formerly Western Union College) until her retirement.
Alice also has a long-standing passion for the United Methodist Church, especially with regard to congregational development and pastoral education.
According to Alice, “I have been well cared for in a retirement home owned by the United Methodist Church for more than seven years. My retirement money is not needed for my care here. I give to missions and invest with the Nebraska United Methodist Foundation. The Foundation distributes the earnings according to my wishes. Most of it goes toward scholarships for young men or women who rank high academically and plan to serve in ministry in the Nebraska Conference where the need is great.”
In 2007, Alice established a second scholarship fund at the Foundation: The Alice Kruse Seminary Scholarship. This fund provides financial aid to seminary students planning to become pastors in the Nebraska Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. This scholarship will be awarded for the first time this summer.
We at the Foundation are truly thankful for Alice’s commitment and sense of stewardship. Her foresight, generosity, and passion have brought so much to our Conference. She has made a difference in a number of lives today, and her gifts will continue to make a difference in the future.
